The following works are a combination of several assignments for an undergraduate class, Interdisciplinary Composition, in which I observed all forms of writing within my discipline of Creative Writing. These selected works particularly focus on experiences that have affected of my writing process, or have further informed me on the different components that play a role in my process, whether these components are conscious or subconscious.

The writing process is an integral part of creating literary art, therefore I found the experiences of all of these assignments to be extremely beneficial in consider how I write. I think being aware of my own process and development helps me in exploring the boundaries of my art so that I am able to stretch myself beyond these limits.

This essay was the first projects assigned in my class, Interdisciplinary Composition. The assignment involved applying Lloyd Bitzer's model of the rhetorical situation to one of my writing experiences. I chose to reflect on the experience of writing an artist statement for an Independent Study. Having to reflect on the artist statement helped me consider how all of my writings--creative, academic, or otherwise--have an effect on my writing identity.

rhetorical situations

This blog post was written for an undergraduate class, Interdisciplinary Composition, in which I describe what kind of rhetorical situations one might find in the discipline of Creative Writing. Here, I state that creative writing seeks to address exigencies which might exclude certain perspectives in the general public. I felt that this post helped me understand why writers write and what inspires writers to write, which prompted me to consider how these kinds of rhetorical situations might influence my writing.

This chart places my writing experiences and process within the components of rhetorical knowledge. This chart was made in two steps which mapped out my writing experience and rhetorical knowledge during two separate occasions. Then I combined those two maps, revealing the subconscious components within my process. Although I was aware as to how my experiences affected my writing, this map shows how I apply my knowledge of the discipline.

This blog post, written for an undergraduate class, Interdisciplinary Composition, considers how lore plays a role in the discipline of Creative Writing. In this I specifically distinguish the difference between lore and knowledge, what might inform knowledge whereas lore is more flexible and therefore informed based on each artist's experience. This experience highlighted the importance of the writing process itself, in terms of each artist's personal preferences, in their ability to create.
